A special New York screening of Only The Strong Survive, the 2003 documentary about great stars of R&B music, from Stax, Motown and Chicago Soul, will be held at the IFC Center on Tuesday November 11, 2014.
Directed by ShowBiz 411 entertainment journalist, Roger Friedman (www.showbiz411.com/), along with Chris Hegedus and DA Pennebaker, the film features the last on-screen performances from music legends such as Isaac Hayes, Wilson Pickett, and Robert “Squirrel” Lester. The excellent film also features performances from the alive and kicking Sam Moore, Carla Thomas (sister of Vaneese Thomas), Mary Wilson and Jerry Butler.
Only the Strong Survive also includes performance footage of Memphis R&B pioneer Rufus Thomas, father of Vaneese Thomas, who passed on at the age of 84, less than two months before the film was screened at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. The film was also selected for Cannes and Telluride.
This is the last film in the IFC Center’s current Pennebaker retrospective.
