The Jazz Age Lawn Party (August 16 & 17, 2014) The Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governor’s Island is New York City’s original prohibition era inspired gathering. Guests dressed in 1920s attire sip on summer cocktails and listen to live jazz music of the era. There’s also a 1920s motorcar exhibition, Charleston dance competition and lessons, vintage portraits and antiques on offer. Find out more here.
The 2014 MTV Video Music Awards (August 24, 2014) Beyonce leads the nominees this year at the 31st Annual MTV Video Music Awards with eight nominations, followed by Iggy Azalea and Eminem each with seven nominations. There will be performances by superstars Arianna Grande, Taylor Swift and Usher. Find out more here.
The 66th Annual Emmy Awards (August 25, 2014) Celebrities unite for the annual Emmy Awards in August to honor the best in US primetime television. Comedian and late-night talk show host Seth Meyers will host the show for the first time. The nominees for Outstanding Comedy Series include Netflix’s new show Orange is the New Black, and HBO’s True Detective is nominated for Outstanding Drama Series. The US Tennis Open (August 25 – September 8) Watch the world’s best players compete under the open sky at the US Open Tennis Championship at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows. An array of Grand Slam veterans like Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Eugenie Bouchard, and Angelique Kerber, and some talented up-and-comers will compete for one of the sport’s most sought-after trophies. Couture Council Artistry of Fashion Awards 2014 (September 3, 2014) The Couture Council of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology will honor fashion designer Carolina Herrera with its 2014 Couture Council Award for Artistry Fashion on Wednesday, September 3, 2014. A benefit luncheon will be held at the Lincoln Center, New York, heralding the arrival of Fall Fashion Week. The Institute’s board chose Carolina Herrera as this year’s recipient because of her exquisite sense of style and commitment to sophisticated elegance. The Toronto International Film Festival (September 4 – 14, 2014) The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is among the most successful public film festivals in the world. World premieres, galas and parties comprise this illustrious event where stars, directors and industry supremos make the rounds. If you are a cinephile or simply just love to experience new and innovative films, TIFF is the event to attend. In this year’s festival, look out for crowd favorites like Wild, directed by Jean-Marc Vallee and starring Reese Witherspoon, and The Equalizer by Antoine Fuqua and starring Denzel Washington. New York Women Foundation’s Annual Neighborhood dinner (September 18, 2014) Save the date for the New York Women Foundation’s annual Neighborhood Dinner in Manhattan. This year, the 20th Anniversary, they’ll be honoring outstanding women leaders serving the Manhattan community, including Lyn Pentecost (Executive Director of the Lower Eastside Girls Club), Hali Lee (Founder and Executive Director of Asian Women Giving Circle), and Christina Seid (Co-owner of Chinatown Ice Cream Factory).
